UNIT I ELECTROCHEMISTRY

I I INTRODUCTION

Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry which deals with th conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy and vice versa. The chemical reactions involving change in electrical energy are called electrochemical reactions. the device in which these reactions take place is called a 'Cel}',

The components a cell are anode, cathode and a electrolyte. When electric current is passed through a Conducting aqueous solution Electrolyte the positively charged ions (cations) move towards the negatively charged electrode Down as cathode. Tl negatively charged ions (anions) move Awards the positively charged electrode called anode. Thus, the electrical energy is converted to chemical energy.

Electrochemistry deals with two lands of cells

I Electrolytic cell - Cells in which the electrical energy is used bring about the chemical reaction.

2. Electrochemical cell (Galvanic or voltaic cell ) - Cells in which the electrical energy is generated by chemical reaction redox reaction.
